Overview

One of the most difficult issues around prescribing opioids after surgery or trauma is knowing how to manage prescriptions for patients with a pre-existing chronic opioid use disorder. In this hour with opioid use disorder specialists Dr. Randy Brown and Dr. Elise Wessol, we explore the changes that chronic opioid use disorder — and treatment for it — have on patients’ pain. We provide guidelines for how to think about prescribing to these patients for acute pain, and how to get help for complicated situations.

This session also includes data from the Surgical Collaborative of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Health Information Organization about opioid prescribing for common surgical procedures in Wisconsin in patients with opioid use disorders — the results are fascinating.

This session, and all the SPOTS sessions, can be watched here on SaferOpioids.com, or you can get an hour of free Continuing Medical Education credit (and opioid CME in Wisconsin) by clicking here.
